Remove subscribers from lists

This can be done as a bulk removal of email addresses, or you can remove subscribers individually.

Deleted versus Unsubscribed

Below are the differences between the two options...

Deleted

When a subscriber's status is changed to deleted:

  • They will no longer receive any emails sent to the list

  • They will not count toward your subscriber total for billing purposes

  • It does not add them to the suppression list (if the address is accidentally re-imported, the subscriber status changes back to active)

  • Their subscriber activity for campaign reports is preserved.

Unsubscribed

When a subscriber's status is changed to unsubscribed:

  • They will no longer receive any emails sent to the list

  • They will also be unsubscribed from any other lists that they are subscribed to, except for lists where the unsubscribe setting has been changed

  • They will not count toward your subscriber total for billing purposes

  • They will be added to the suppression list

  • Their subscriber activity for campaign reports is preserved.

TIP
A common approach is to use "unsubscribed" if someone has asked to be removed, and "deleted" if you choose to remove them for any reason. That way you can easily tell the difference later on.

Remove Subscribers in Bulk

Follow the steps below to remove multiple subscribers from one or all of your lists. You will need to have the subscriber email addresses ready to complete this task.

1. Click Lists & subscribers, then select the subscriber list you want to remove people from.

2. On the list details page, click Remove subscribers in the right sidebar.

3. Enter the subscriber email addresses into the text box, one address per line.

4. Select one of the remove options:

All my lists – Changes the subscriber status to unsubscribed.
This list only – Changes the subscriber status to deleted.

5. Click Remove subscribers.

Remove Individual Subscribers

Follow the steps below to search a single list for a subscriber you want to remove, either by deleting or unsubscribing them.

1. Click Lists & subscribers, then click a list name to open the list details page.

2. Enter a subscriber's email address or name in the "Search list" field, then click Search.

3. Select the checkbox to the right of the subscriber you want to remove. This will display a "Move selected to" menu in the toolbar below the list:

4. From the dropdown menu, select Deleted or Unsubscribed, then click Move.
